List of Filipino Surperstitions or "Pamahiin".

Superstition, or locally known as "pamahiin", involves beliefs, practices and procedures based upon conscious and unconscious assumptions, usually concerned with the nature of the cause and effect. Superstitions are by no means exclusive to the Filipinos, but we have many of them about anything and everything and they greatly influence our thoughts and actions most of the time unconsciously.

Here's the list of some of the Filipino superstitions:
  • When you open an umbrella indoor, a centipede will fall down from the ceiling.
  • Be careful on what you would say or do to a newborn baby or his/her parents would not let you leave until you applied some of your saliva on the newborn.
  • If your are sweeping at night, you must say "Excuse me" to the spirits you may be hitting.
  • If you drop a fork on the ground accidentally, you will have male visitor.
  • If your are pregnant, you ca not attend a baptism of another baby or your child and the other will become rivals.
  • To whistle at night could cause the wind to become stronger.
  • To play with your food could cause you stomach ache.
  • To have a black-and-blue mark on any part of the body without knowing how it was caused means that a spirit has touched you.
  • To find a moth in your house means that a spirit is present.
  • Many Filipinos blame spirits for making people sick and they sometimes depend on the faith healers to cure the person, rather than calling a medical doctor.
  • It is said that if a person dies, all of the house windows should be open because the open windows would allow the deceased to depart.
  • Others believe that people should not sweep the floor when somebody dies for it might cause the death of other members of the family.
