What are the different Locomotor Movements?

Locomotor movements refer to movements from one place going to another place.

Here are the different locomotor movements:

Walking
Walking involves the transfer of body weight from one foot to the other while moving in different directions.

Observe the following guides while walking.
  • The upper body should be carried straight with a slight forward lean.
  • Swing legs freely.
  • Swing arms freely and naturally on the sides.
  • Keep shoulders in line with the body.

Running
Running is a fast walk movement.

Observe the following guides while running
  • Swing the legs freely from hip joint.
  • Raise the knee as the leg swings forward.
  • Keep arms bent and close to the body.
  • Lean body slightly forward.

Jumping
Jumping is a spring into the air from one foot or both feet and landing on both feet. It can be done upward, forward, backward, and sideward.

Observe the following guides while jumping.
  • Bend knees and swing arms at the back.
  • Push off body, with heels slightly raised.
  • Swing arms forward-upward while into air.
  • Bend knees while landing.
  • Land slightly with a spring on both feet.

Hopping
Hopping is a spring from one foot and landing on the same foot. It can be done in place, backward, forward, or sideward.

Follow this procedure while hopping.
  • Spring lightly into the air with one foot.
  • Land lightly on the same foot.
  • Keep knees relaxed.

Skipping
Skipping is a combination of a step and a hop on a faster tempo.

  • Spring quickly alternately on right of left foot.
  • Keep arms swinging freely on sides.
