What are the components of blood and their functions?

Blood is the liquid components of the cardiovascular system.

Here are the components of blood:

Plasma
  • yellowish liquid portion of the blood
  • transport nutrients to the cells and carries waste materials
Red Blood Cells (RBC)
  • also called red corpuscles or erythrocytes and constantly produced by the bone marrow
  • they transport oxygen from the lungs to all of the living tissues of the body and carry away carbon dioxide
White Blood Cells (WBC)
  • also called as the "soldiers of the body"
  • they fight foreign bodies that cause disease and infections.
Platelets
  • smaller than red blood cells
  • produce substances needed for blood to clot
