Balance is the equality of the forces of attraction. It may be achieved by the use of colors, spaces, forms and the interplay of light and dark values in painting:
There are two kinds of balance:
1. Formal or Symmetrical Balance - One side of the composition is made equal to or the exact duplicate of the other side. This method reflects a sense of dignity, poise, order, stability, security, or permanence.
2. Informal or Assymetrical Balance - Elements of both sides are made equal but different motifs are used. This type produces a sense of spontaneity, movement, dynamism, and excitement.
